For the 2021-2022 school year, I was an on-site substitute teacher at Lindsey Academy, a middle school within the Long Beach Unified School district. I proved to be a great support and asset for the school as I was readily available to accept last minute substitute positions as well as multiple long term substitute positions at this school. These positions included 8th Grade Math, 6th Grade Accelerated and Non-Accelerated Math, 6th Grade English, and Math Core Support for 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders. During this tough school year where students were back to in-person teaching, I was reminded of my passion of making education accessible to all students and providing equitable opportunities to all students.
As teachers, we play an important role in ensuring that all of our students are able to engage with the content, as well as access it. While I was teaching 8th grade math, it was always empowering to watch my students go from not understanding the content, to slowly understanding, to completely understanding it and being able to do their work on their own with little to no modeling from me. I love seeing student growth and understanding. It makes all the lesson planning, re-teaching, and modeling much more worth it when my students can come up to me and tell me that they “get it.” My goal is to create a safe and nurturing classroom environment that allows students to grow.
